Pre-Mission Medical

Posted on Tue Jun 16th, 2020 @ 8:07am by Lieutenant Commander Calvin Morgan & Captain Abigail Laurens

Mission: Into The Delta Triangle
Location: Sickbay

Sickbay was quiet, it made for a nice change. So far it had seemed like every time she had found herself in this part of the ship it was far too busy for her liking. Quiet was definitely preferable under the circumstances. Even the nurse who usually miraculously appeared every time she stepped through the doors seemed unusually absent. With a small smile, Abigail made her way across to the Chief Medical Officer's office, tapping lightly at the door before she opened it and stepped into the threshold. "Lieutenant Commander Morgan, I hope I'm not interrupting?" she asked warmly. "I brought some information for you," she added, holding up the PaDD in her hand.

Calvin, who was in his usual state of half uniform dress, looked up from his PaDD. "No! Not at all," He said with a warm smile. "What kind of information?" He asked, taking the PaDD gently.

Stepping into the office, Abigail made her way to the chair across from him and sat gracefully, holding the PaDD across to him. "I couldn't sleep so I spent some time trawling through the computers looking for any kind of environmental information about Kessik and cross referenced it with medical reports from ships that have had crew members planetside in either location. There doesn't appear to be a lot to be concerned about, but both colonies do have reports of airborne pollutants and toxins in low levels that are likely attributed to the mining and refining facilities."

“Why the trouble sleeping?” Calvin asked, glancing up from the PaDD as he skimmed through the information. He was looking for keywords and terms for things to cross reference from his own research.

"Too many lattes," Abigail fibbed with a smile. "So does that help you with your prep for this?" She leaned back in the seat, watching him as he scanned through the information on the PaDD.

Calvin raised his eyebrow and stopped reading for a moment to look at her. It was obvious he didn’t believe her. He knew no amount of lattes would ever keep her awake. He decided to not respond and look back down at the PaDD. “Yes, it will be good information to cross reference with the material I have. I’m not very concerned for the crew to go down there. A quick briefing on respiratory complications to watch for, but that’s about it. Nothing to slow them down, and nothing I can’t fix once they get back.” He kept scrolling, hitting the highlights, his lips moving as he read.

"That will make it easy, at least from a medical perspective," Abigail replied as she continued watching him. "I would suggest that you do your own research anyway into the area. I may have missed something important. Let me know when you want to brief the away teams. It might be easiest to do it right before you leave when everyone is together and ready, but if you want it done sooner then we can make that happen too."

Calvin shook his head. “I see no reason to waste anyone’s time with a separate meeting. The prior to departure meeting will suffice.” He set the PaDD down before continuing. “You leave? Am I going down as well?”

Abigail nodded slowly. "You were assigned to team one Commander," she replied with a smile. "Unless of course you don't want to go?"

Calvin set down the PaDD, having reached the end of the synopsis of the information contained on it and folded his hands on the desk. Looking directly at her, he smiled. “I’d never give up an opportunity to do a little exploring. Maybe treat some ailments on the way for the people. I’m sure their technology is not as current as ours.” He glanced around the room before focusing on her again. “So are we going to talk about the tribble in the room? Or ignore it. Because you know what they say about ignoring a tribble, it only multiples. I think you’ve had enough time to come up with a better excuse than lattes for lack of sleep.”

There was a soft laugh and Abigail shook her head. "Tribbles are at least cute and fluffy which helps make up for the troubles they cause. I assure you Doctor, I am quite fine. I've had a lot on my mind, it made it difficult to sleep, but I am quite fine. Absolutely nothing for you to worry about."

"Telling me not to worry about crew is like telling a fish not to breath underwater," Calvin responded softly, with a smile. It wasn't worth it to push the Captain he knew, but he couldn't leave it alone either. "My door is always open if you're having trouble sleeping."

"And one day I just may take you up on that Commander," Abigail said as she rose gracefully to her feet. "Now is there anything else you need from me to get ready?"

Standing reflexively when she did, he pondered the question for a moment before replying. "I should be in good shape, but I'll let you know if anything pops up." Calvin replied with a smile.

Abigail leaned forward, her hand resting on his forearm lightly as she squeezed gently. "Thank you Calvin," she said with another smile. "I'll see you at the away team briefing." Without waiting for him to reply, Abigail turned on her heel and headed out of his office. She still had a lot to do.

He sat back down in his chair, quietly contemplating the Captain. He worried not only because it was his job, but because he cared. He knew some of the weight on her shoulders, and assumed there was more. With a long exhale he picked up where he left off, filing and organizing information for the mission.
