A Silence Of Alarm

Mission: Sounds of Silence

Things were different.

Not everything, but some things with these creatures was definitely different and the High Supervisor knew it did not bode well for his collections operation. The problem was, however, that this operation was very, VERY lucrative and had been a success fully and completely to this point. Twenty-seven hours remained on his schedule and he wanted to make the most of it, but his people in what this ship called a medical ward informed him that more and more of their livestock was congregating there seeking aid. Then there was that report of determined-looking livestock that went off together and sealed themselves in one room dedicated for scientific research without a tender to harvest them when they were ripe.

The High Supervisor pressed a key on his wrist pad, summoning two of his subordinates, and made his way to the corridor that they had made their entry on, due to the signs that it had either been abandoned or just not commonly used. Either way, they could have their discussion in this location and not have to worry at all.

"High Supervisor, the harvest is going very well, 29 percent above projections. I want to extend our operations by another twelve hours and-"

"I disagree, High Supervisor, there have been reports that people are suspicious that we're here and are trying to-"

"Ridiculous!" The first subordinate hissed, "Our technology is superior and they can't even begin to know! We have never been caught before, we are not going to get caught now. With another twelve hours, we will have exceeded our initial projections by sixty percent, the Overlord will be pleased with us."

The second subordinate flared his lips, but didn't strike back at his fellow, instead addressing the High Supervisor, "There is something about these people that is alarming. Their younglings are more perceptive than their adults, perhaps something about this larval stage that fades as they age and they don't have to fear predators as much. Perhaps its their eyes see further into different phases and they can see us as we move. We should cut this operation short, leave before they can prove we are here so that we may continue to harvest them another day."

The High Supervisor ignored the rolled eyes of the harvester scientist and considered for a few more moments, "I agree with both of you, which is why we will leave, several hours early, but with our full quota. Scientist, you will begin to inform our people that they are to make their final harvests in twelve hours, but to be as diligent as possible until then." He then turned to the more ambitious of the two, "Scientist, it is your responsibility to secure the harvest and ensure its safety. Make your own final harvest within the next eight hours and return to the vessel to make those arrangements."

The first subordinate bowed slightly and hurried off, eager to harvest as much of that precious cortisol as he could before he had to stop. The second subordinate went his own way, concentrating on the task at hand while the High Supervisor readied for his own task. These people would never know they were here. Not for one minute.
