Waking Time

Posted on Fri Oct 11th, 2019 @ 10:33pm by Captain Abigail Laurens

Mission: Sounds of Silence
Location: Personal Quarters

There was darkness, the air was cool and soft soothing sounds were being played over the sound system, yet sleep still didn't come. She had no idea how long she had been laying in the dark, but now even comfort seemed out of reach. "Computer, what's the time?" she asked, even her voice sounding weary as she spoke.

"The time is zero two forty seven."

It couldn't be... Abigail bit down on her bottom lip, feeling the pressure and tension in the base of her skull building again already. She hadn't actually gone to bed until well past midnight, and she had surely been laying in bed for many, many hours, so how was it still so early? "Computer, repeat the time."

"The time is zero two forty eight."

Pushing her way out of bed, Abigail padded quietly toward the bathroom. Sleep wasn't going to come, for the third night in a row, so it seemed that the best thing she could do would be to at least be productive and get some work done.

Emerging a short time later, dressed in a clean uniform with her long hair brushed out but falling loosely down her back, Abigail got a coffee from the replicator and headed toward the desk in the corner of her bedroom, keying in her access code and bringing the console to life.

"Computer, schedule a meeting with Commander Gail, lets make it in my ready room at eleven hundred hours today," Abigail said softly, before taking a sip of her coffee. "Add it to my calender, notify Lieutenant Gail, and send a request to Kaarg to provide lunch for the two of us in my ready room at twelve hundred hours."

She scrolled through her list, looking at the things that needed to be done, trying to focus on the words on the screen in front of her. "Send a reminder to Lieutenant Morgan that onboarding medicals need to be done for the crew that have just joined us. We will need those completed before we arrive at 412." As she spoke, her voice cracked slightly, making her cough to clear her throat.

"Schedule an appointment for Lieutenant Rue to attend my ready room at zero ten hundred hours today," her voice cracked again.

"And send a reminder to Lieutenant Matashi to run a full security diagnostic on all our main security systems as well as our backup systems." As she spoke, her voice stayed raspy.

Taking another sip of her coffee, she winced at a sudden pain in her throat, her free hand moving to the base of her neck, opening her mouth to speak, but this time no sound came. She tried again, without success. Setting the mug of coffee down, she closed her eyes for a long moment before pushing away from the chair and heading back toward her bedroom. Maybe she'd try to sleep a little more. Maybe it would help.
