Personality & Traits

General Overview Stephanie enjoys her work as an engineer, for the challenge both mentally and physically. It's not about the praise, it's the satisfaction of a job well done that drives her. She tries to have a good working relationship with those around her, always ready with a joke or witty remark to keep spirits up, though when frustrated, the remarks do fall into sarcasm and cynically funny comments.
Strengths & Weaknesses Telling Stephanie something cannot be done is both an insult and a challenge to her. She is not prepared to accept failure as an option, but this is also due to a case of survivor's guilt that she tries to manage through her work. In fact, if it is someone that she'll evade, it's a councilor for what is clearly post traumatic stress disorder when faced with a seemingly impossible task. Her response is to all but work herself into the ground to solve it.

With her colleagues, Stephanie has few friends but many people who enjoy working with her. She lets people into her life selectively, but is still friendly and good to work with. She's generally helpful and does tend to downplay her role if she figures something out before others do. She does not have issues with authority though she may sometimes take alternative routes to solve issues without asking.
Ambitions Stephanie is genuinely unsure if she wants to one day have her own ship, but she'll happily offer her services to some new cutting edge project if it comes up. In the meantime, her goal is to leave every ship running better than she found it and hopefully also teach enough people how to keep it that way along the way.
Hobbies & Interests On top of her interest in the technical operation of every ship in Starfleet service and learning about how other races also have built their ships, Stephanie is an avid builder of scale models of ships past and present.

She isn't a social person, though she will attend gatherings she is invited to. When given holodeck time, she prefers just reading technical manuals while on a tropical beach or in a quiet forest by herself.

Personal History Stephanie was born in 2366 on Deep Space K-7 to a Starfleet engineer and a Federation News Service journalist, along with her twin sister Rose. They were quickly moved from ship to ship as Stephanie grew up, until they moved to Mars when the Dominion War broke out. Her father survived the conflict but was reassigned to Utopia Planitia after the end of the war. As he often brought his work home with him, Stephanie was exposed to the engineering problems facing post-war Starfleet early on, and frequently would be taken on tours of the fleet yards. Many of her father's colleagues became part of her family, and she began to accept Starfleet was just her family in one way or another.

In 2384, Stephanie and Rose both submitted their applications for Starfleet Academy, with Stephanie going into the Operations track while Rose became a Marine. One of the role models Stephanie had was one of the Engineering department's instructors, Chief Miles O'Brien, who showed that the field of Operations was a dirty, tiring and thankless task but absolutely essential. She would adopt many of his ideas by the time she graduated in 2388, including wearing her sleeves rolled up.

This work ethic did not go unnoticed and she got posted to a newer ship, the USS Bunker Hill. The ship was field testing new but untested warp core design advancements. Emboldened by the rate the advancements were going, the senior staff of the Bunker Hill kept pushing the new warp core further and further. However, while on her Gamma Shift rotation, Stephanie noticed a critical flaw that had been overlooked and attempted to bring it up, but the Chief Engineer chose to ignore it. A test nearly destroyed the Bunker Hill in 2390 but Stephanie decided to report the issue directly to the Captain with a fix that would require drydocking the ship, preventing the destruction of the ship.

This got her a promotion and choice of next posting, and so she selected yet another newer ship field testing new technologies, the USS Sirocco. Her luck, however, ran out as the Sirocco was destroyed by a catastrophic system failure less than a year later. Stephanie was among the survivors, but had been forced to seal an emergency bulkhead that trapped much of the Engineering crew on the wrong side. She continues to blame herself for their deaths and believes that something she did or did not do did not catch some kind of flaw like she had on the Bunker Hill. An inquiry found there was no wrongdoing on any of the crew and she was cleared to resume duty by late 2391.

Stephanie was placed on the USS Chaffee, a more conventional ship posting that gave her a chance to recover and find her place once more. While she has done so seemingly quite well, and has even taken on more leadership responsibilities, Stephanie McMillan continues to blame herself for the loss of the USS Sirocco and has vowed to never lose another ship. She would remain on the Chaffee until being reassigned two years later to the USS Astraea.
